In order to prevent emotional chaos, every Apian undergoes a medial procedure designed to control the hive and prevent disruption.  When surgeon Melle chooses to inject her sister Cera with a placebo, they begin to experience life without reigns.  Life becomes unfiltered the way it was intended and they quickly discover the fractures in the hive's flawless exterior.
 
As Melle steps into her new life, she develops a fondness for a man from within the oppressed system.  The facade of Apia begins to fall away, piece by piece.  Through Cera's eyes we move through jealousy, longing, rage, devotion and awakening while discovering the inner workings of a once well intentioned society.  Apia explores what it means to feel fully alive in a world designed to suppress and control.  It asks whether harmony without humanity is truly peace or simply control with a shiny bow.
